TEXT: Malachi 2:16
" For the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence," Says the LORD of hosts. " Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.
While I sympathise and empathise with some unbelievers and few believers who have divorced, it is worthy to emphasize that God hates divorce.
Some people have said that God only said that he hates divorce, and not that divorce is a sin. This only shows how twisted and hardened the heart of man could be.
If you hate something, does it not mean that such a thing is offensive and detestable to you.
For instance, as a parent, would you love to see your children do things that you hate?
Whether for legit reason or not, God still hates divorce, especially among his people.
Divorce tears apart the immediate people concerned, and all the relationships around them.
No matter how genuine the reasons for divorce amongst believers (God's children) might sound, the truth is that divorce hurts. It hurts really bad. It hurts the various parties involved- the divorcees, the children, the in-laws, friends and everything built together by the divorcees.
Apart from the hurts that divorce brings on the parties involved, God clearly says, He hates it because it is a direct assault on God's mandate from the very beginning.
Our Lord Jesus Christ mentioned this mandate while responding to the tempting question of the Pharisees on the matter of divorce.
Our Lord Jesus Christ clearly stated the mandate of the beginning when he said to the Pharisees, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,'. and (He) said,' *..For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'?Matthew 19:5*.
Let us look at the simple equation from God's marital mandate from the very beginning:- the man shall *leave* his own parents, and be *joined* to his wife and *the two* shall *become one.*
The above means one plus one equals one (1+1=1). So, you see the reason for which God hates divorce. Most people (if not all) that come out of divorce never returns to wholeness anymore.
This is what we need to teach singles before they enter into marriage. They need to do due diligence to be sure that God is truly leading them into a holy matrimony with a particular person.
*If you trust in the Lord and acknowledge the God who hates divorce in all your ways, He will surely direct your path even as you chose your life partner, then divorce will not be part of your story.*
The only condition Jesus gave for divorce is sexual immorality.
