Text :Matthew 26:52&53
*But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?*
Today, we'll glean a great wisdom from the meekness of Jesus Christ. Like it was established yesterday, *meekness goes beyond gentleness and mildness, it is the inner workings of God in a man to refrain from unleashing himself against an opposing fellow or situation.*
Our text is a very outstanding and remarkable statement that reveals the very core and depth of Jesus' meek nature in the face of great tribulation.
In the text, Jesus Christ pointed out what he could, but that He will not do.
Jesus said he could ask God to send more than twelve legions of angels.
Let's look at the implications of this singular request Jesus never made.
A legion is a body of soldiers whose number differed at different times, and in the time of Augustus seems to have consisted of 6826 men (i.e. 6100 foot soldiers, and 726 horsemen).
Though Jesus could ask God to send more than 12 legions, but let's just consider the impact of only 12 legions of angels on earth. Our Lord Jesus Christ restrained himself from using His power, rights and privileges to hurt the whole of humanity by not asking God to send him legions of angels.
So, if a legion is made up of 6,826 angels, then 12 legions will be 81,912 angels. That is, if Jesus had prayed for His deliverance, well over 80,000 angels would have arrived at the scene.
Now let's look at the impact of one singular angel in 2 Kings 19:35 " _And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand(185,000): and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses._
If one angel killed 185,000 soldiers just in one night, then 81,912 (12 legions of)angels will kill over 15.153 billion people if Jesus had requested His Father to send them down.
That was more than the entire world population then and even now.
*God's long-suffering and meekness has brought us salvation and repentance, hence, He has kept the whole universe together despite its decadence and corruption.* 2 Peter 3:9.
_The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance._
True strength and power are not expressed by a man who uses sword against the weak, vulnerable and ignorant. Jesus did not use His power because He knew that the multitude that came to arrest Him are weak, ignorant and vulnerable.
Learn from our Lord to always sheath your sword. Don't be easily tempted, and don't be in a hurry to use your power, right and privileges against people. Allow the Lord to reveal Himself on your behalf and fight your battles for you.
ALWAYS STAY MEEK AND LOWLY LIKE OUR LORD IN THE FACE OF TRIBULATION.
