Text : 1Co 9:24 ISV
*You know that in a race all the runners run but only one wins the prize, don’t you? You must run in such a way that you may be victorious.*
Few years back, I followed my little son to his School's inter house sport as he was part of the participants. He was to run for his house in a 100 meter dash race.
Prior to that time his teacher had told me that he is one of their best athletes but he gets easily distracted with other competitors.
On the D-day, true to his teacher's words, my son was obviously leading the race, giving a reasonable distance between himself and the next runner. But he will stop intermittently looking back to talk to the other runners.
"stop running after me," he shouted. When he was just few steps to the finish line, he stopped again to ward off his opponent again. While he was at it, the next athlete ran passed him to be the first while he took the second place.
The annoying part was, my boy was oblivion of the import of his actions. And this is so true of many believers today. Just like my little boy, they did not know that :
1. *We are in a race.*
Therefore, having so vast a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, and throwing off everything that hinders us and especially the sin that so easily entangles us, *_let us keep our focus on the race set before us, and run patiently with endurance_* Heb 12:1 ISV.
*That you are ignorant of the fact that you are in a race doesn't make it less of a race, your ignorance only places you in a disadvantaged position.*
2. *We are surrounded with a vast cloud of witnesses.*
Being one of the witnesses in my son's race, I had a feel of what the cloud of witnesses could be going through. All of his mistakes meant a lot to his team and also to me. Every well meaning fan desires the success of his club.
*Give the clouds of witnesses reasons to rejoice over your life.*
3. *It's important to throw off everything that hinders you.*
*To win in this Christian race, you must identify what hinders you and be determined to throw them off.*
Everyone who enters an athletic contest practices self-control in everything. They do it to win a wreath that withers away, but we run to win a prize that never fades.1Co 9:25 ISV.
*PRAYER FOCUS*
1. I throw off every thing that hinders me in the course of my race and I cut off every entanglement of sin.
