TEXT: John 6:51
“I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eats of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
Jesus made one of the most profound declarations about His identity when He said, *“I am the living bread* which came down from heaven.” He was revealing to the people that He was not merely a teacher, prophet, or miracle worker. He is the One sent from heaven to give eternal life to a dying and perishing world.
After Jesus miraculously fed thousands of people with physical bread, many followed Him, hoping for more. But Jesus wanted them to understand that there was something far greater than the bread that satisfies physical hunger.
Like we have explained in the previous devotionals, Physical bread may strengthen the body for a while, but eventually, the body grows old and dies.
No matter how much physical food a person eats, it cannot give eternal life.
Jesus, however, is the Bread of Life - the living Bread. Whoever truly receives Him by faith receives the life that only Him can give.
A number of Jesus' disciples found this teaching difficult to accept and eventually deserted Him. They were willing to follow Jesus when He performed miracles and provided bread for their physical needs, but they were unwilling to fully embrace Him and the truth He taught. This is still the challenge many people are faced with today.
Many people spend their entire lives pursuing the bread that perishes - money, possessions, pleasure, power, recognition, and worldly acquisitions, while neglecting the Bread that gives eternal life.
There is nothing wrong with working for our physical needs, but it becomes dangerous when temporary things take the place of God in our hearts.
The difference between the two breads is eternity apart. One satisfies temporarily; the other satisfies eternally. One sustains the body for a moment; the other gives life to the soul forever.
When you eat physical bread, you may become physically stronger, but one day your body will still grow old and die. But when you receive and continually feed on Christ - the living Bread, you grow in your relationship with God, mature spiritually, and receive eternal life in you.
*Jesus gave His flesh for the redemption of the world. Through His sacrifice on the cross, He made salvation available to everyone who believes in Him.* Therefore, the greatest need of humanity is not more material possessions or physical comfort; it is Jesus Christ.
Beloved, do not spend all your strength pursuing what will eventually perish. Seek the Bread of Life. Feed daily on Him.
