TEXT: Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Yesterday, we looked at the first man who stored his treasure here on earth. He chose earthly riches over eternal life.
Today, we shall be looking at the second man who chose salvation and store up his earthly treasure in exchange for eternal life.
While the first man was very religious, the second man was a tax collector, an outright sinner.
It is important to note that where you keep your treasure also determines where you will eventually end up.
Zacchaeus was a chief among the publicans and he was very rich. He sought to see Jesus but he could not due to the press around him and as a result of his small stature.
In view of his stature, he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree so as to gain a height and positional advantage. Jesus saw him, asked him to come down and he followed him home.
You can imagine the kind of effort a rich man and a chief tax collector put in, in order to see Jesus. He stakes his status and personality all for the sake of seeing Jesus.
He desired to see Jesus not for the miracles or anything of the natural. He simply desired presence more than anything else.
When Jesus Christ got to the sycamore tree where Zacchaeus was, he said, " Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for today I must abide at your house.
While in Zacchaeus' house, he stood up and said to the Lord, “Listen, sir! I will give half my belongings to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will pay back four times as much.” (Luke 19:8, GNB).
In response to his action, Jesus said to him, “Salvation has come to this house today, for this man, also, is a descendant of Abraham.(Luke 19:9,GNB).
Zacchaeus received salvation by giving his possessions to the poor and by restitution. This is not just mere givings, Zacchaeus gave his heart first. While he was parting with his riches, Jesus could see that his heart was going upward to God in repentance and in true worship simultaneously. This did not just start in the house, but the yearnings for God started while Zacchaeus ran ahead, climbing the sycamore tree to see Jesus.
*If you would not give up your riches to serve the course of God, then you will certainly give it up to serve mammon.*
To be free from the grip of mammon, you must subject your riches under God.
*God does not need your money, but when you drop your money at God's feet, then you will be free from the grip of mammon.*
*What places a man under the servitude of mammon is not his possessions, money, or riches, it is his inability and unwillingness to submit them all to God.*
*Keep giving to the course of the kingdom and to humanity abundantly, and you will be totally free from the grip of mammon like Zacchaeus.*
*Bible Reading:*
Luke 19:1-10.
