Text: Matthew 7:13
Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
I remember vividly when I was younger, I used to run errands to a particular food vendor in our neighborhood. We used to call the vendor by the name " *mama narrow way* ". This is because we often access her house through a narrow path.
The features of this path are:
1. The path can only take one person at a time. Any second person would have to stay behind or right in front of you.
2. The road is usually used by children due to its narrowness.
3. The road does not give room for extra luggage except the plate in your hand.
Just as our Lord Jesus Christ mentioned in the scripture, I could relate with the analogy of narrow way due to my childhood experience.
The way to life is indeed narrow, and it takes those who can abide by the rules to walk through it. This road does not permit for side by side walk with any. You can only see the person before or behind you. In the same manner, the narrow way that leads to life is one wherein you *follow* Christ. It is not a group call, it's a personal journey.
Jesus Christ commanded his disciples to follow Him because He is the one ahead.
"And when he had called the people unto him with His disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and *follow* me".(Mark 8:34).
On the narrow way, you are to *deny* yourself, *take up your cross* and *follow* Christ.
Narrow road is a road that calls for self denial, daily carrying of your cross and daily following of the great and good shepherd. Hence, we are being admonished to keep our gaze on Jesus Christ, who is the author and finisher of our faith. ( Hebrews 12:2). This is because He is ahead of you in the narrow way. In fact, He is the very way Himself. In John 14:6, He declared Himself as the way, the truth and the life.
While every believer is meant to look at Jesus Christ in the narrow way, we can also see saints that have gone ahead of us. That's the reason for proper discipleship. Jesus asked Peter to follow him because He knew that once Peter followed, other disciples can follow after Him through the steps of Peter. (John 21:22).
Paul also stated this truth in 1 Corinthians 4:16, "...I beseech you, be ye followers of me." and in 1 Corinthians 11:1, he wrote
"Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ."
It is clear that anyone in the narrow way must certainly have people ahead of him who are following Christ. This is discipleship- following those that are following Christ.
Do not just claim to be following Christ, you must have people ahead of you teaching you and modelling Christ for you.
*That ye be not slothful, but _followers of them_ who through faith and patience inherit the promises.(Hebrews 6:12).*
*Today, we need more people who can model Christ and not just mere preachers on the pulpit.*
