Text : 1 Kings17:14.
Because this is what the LORD God of Israel says: ‘That jar of flour will not run out, nor will that bottle of oil become empty until the very day that the LORD sends rain on the surface of the ground.
Economic meltdown is dated back to the Bible days. During the time of prophet Elijah, there was a serious economic meltdown by reason of drought.
The famine was so severe that mother and child await death after they have exhausted all their means of livelihood.
Such was the case of this woman in our study text today, when the man of God asked her for a piece of bread, her response showed the despicable position that she was. “As the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have so much as a muffin, just a handful of flour in a bowl and some oil left in a bottle. Now I’m going to find some sticks so I can cook a last meal for my son and for me. Then we’re going to eat it and die.” 1 Kings 17:12.
That was a very hopeless situation. Eating your last meal and waiting till death knocks you down from starvation is such a terrible situation. Or watching your child die from starvation and dehydration is a very devastating thing.
Now, this is never the plan or program of God for anyone. God doesn't want us to be hopeless. The whole nation got into such hopeless situation because of their sins. The nation of Israel at that time had witnessed several reigns of wicked kings who have opened portals to divers kinds of evil to the whole people.
Proverbs 29:2 says, *When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked bears rule, the people mourn.*
A number of times, whenever the people are groaning and moaning, it is because they are being ruled by wicked rulers. When the cup of wickedness of such nation is full, anguish is inevitable.
However, amidst this anguish, you can be exempted if you are willing and obedient. This widow was exempted because she obeyed the words of God.
She was not only sustained during the famine, she was buoyant enough to sustain others. Fear not, God will sustain you even in difficult situations, just be careful to obey His instructions.(Joshua 1:8).
