Text : Ephesians 5:5
*For this you know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.*
*One very silent sin that can debar one from entering the kingdom of God is covetousness.* Did you know that covetousness is idolatry? Well, read the text again.
The book of Colossians stated it very clearly- Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: Colossians 3:5.
Idolatry is simply the worship of idols. Idol is not just a graven image but anything that is revered and worshipped. *When you reference someone or something more than necessary, then, you have turn such fellow or thing to an idol.*
Now, the question is, why is covetousness regarded as idolatry? Covetousness is an ungodly desire for something that belongs to another. It can lead to greed, stealing, jealousy, envy and even murder. Our Heavenly Father wants us to be grateful for the things we have and to trust Him for what we desire.
The first of the biblical ten commandents as given by God borders on idolatry: “You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3-6). God doesn't want anything to rival His place in your life. Ever since the fall of man, covetousness has been one of the major instruments the devil uses in creating images of other gods in the heart of man. Beware of covetousness.
