Text : Hebrews 13:5
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."
By nature, human wants are unlimited, human needs are insatiable. That is, man is incapable of satisfying all his wants and even needs. *Anyone who can't curb his quest for more of anything except God, will eventually be quenched by his quest.*
Nothing in this life has the capacity to satisfy the longings in the soul of man. There is a void in man that nothing in this world can fill except God.
A number of times, man thinks getting more money will solve this longing, but the more he acquires, the bigger the void becomes. This unquenching desire to keep acquiring things leads men to the love of money.
1 Timothy 6:10 aptly says, *For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.*
It's clear from the above scripture that even believers are not free from this cancerous desire- the insatiable need of man.
Another name for this insatiable need is covetousness, and covetousness will lead to the love of money which is *the root of all evil.* Subtle as it may seem, covetousness is powerful enough to make believers err from the faith. Note that anyone who erred from the faith will be pierced with many sorrows.
The first step to being free from the grip of covetousness is to agree with yourself that you can easily be overtaken with it. Jesus Christ warned us to beware of covetousness, because He knows it can creep in unaware.
And he said unto them, *Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.* Luke 12:15. Your life is not measured by what you possess but by who possess you.
Once you realised your vulnerability to covetousness, then, you will understand your dependence on God to be free from it and to stay free.
Remember, only Godliness with contentment brings great gain. 1Timothy 6:6. If you desire great gain, then, pursue Godly living and choose to be content in Him, because He has promised never to leave nor forsake you.
