Text: Galatians 6:2
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
I realized that when you bear your brother's burden, you are as well saving your own self. No matter the condition you are in today, please do not allow your heart to grow cold towards your brethren to the point that you don't want to bear their burdens.
Some years ago, my spouse and I embarked on a missionary journey to a mountainous location in Nigeria. It was about to rain, so I had asked someone to descend the mountain with my spouse. It took about three to four hours to descend the mountain.
The rain caught up with us on our way while descending the mountain. The resident missionary asked us to hasten up because the major path we will be passing would have been filled with water from the mountains, and this would have made crossing difficult. Truly, when we got to that point, we already have a flowing river right before us. So, the question is, how long do we have to stay before we cross, the water level and current kept increasing.
The missionary had to ask us to take the risk. We need to cross before it's too late. The whole place was full of stones and the torrent was very high. Four of us joined hands together, and I was at one extreme. The most scary thing was that I cannot swim, and even if I can swim, this is not a 'swimmable' river. The whole place was filled with rocks.
Right in the middle of the river, the missionary who has been working in this area for years lost his grips and he was going to fall. Getting him stabilized was no small task for the remaining three of us. If we allow him fall, it's certain I can't make it alone. I was thinking of letting go, because it appeared his weight was much on me. But I had to struggle hard for his stability because his stability also determines my own safe arrival at the shore. I incurred injuries while trying to steady him and myself, but I didn't give up.
If I had left him to fall by himself, he would have fallen inside the rocky river and die, one can't swim it because it's full of rocks.
However, one thing is certain, if we allow him to fall, the three of of us were not also safe. While the water level is not up to our chest, no single person can walk through it. It takes the bond of four to do that.
Three of us bore the burden of our brother, by so doing, we saved him and ourselves as well.
Don't just stand and be watching your brethren go through struggles all by themselves. Always lend a helping hand and by so doing you would be saving yourself as well.
*Standing alone is not safe, standing unconcerned about other's burdens and problems is also dangerous. Either way, you are not safe yourself, be your brother's keeper.*
