And he said, Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you loves, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
As we read through Genesis chapter 22, we already know the end from the very beginning. We know that God was only testing Abraham to see how much he loved Him in comparism to Isaac. And we know what the outcome of the story was. Abraham passed the test and God blessed him.
While the event that took place thousands of years ago has become a story today , we must always put ourselves in a constant remembrance that it was a real life situation that happened to a man like us.
At the point God was asking Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on one of the Mountains in Moriah, Isaac was more like all that Abraham had. Abraham had become contented and fulfilled in his son (Isaac) who was his heir.
At this point, the Lord needed to check on Abraham's heart to see if his love for Isaac had passed his love for Him, or if Abraham's love for Him had been replaced by his love for Isaac.
God's tone in Genesis 22:2 shows that He is truly a jealous God.(Exodus 20:5). He simply does not want to share your heart with any other person or thing. He wants to be your all in all.
He said to Abraham, "Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love..." What made God tested Abraham was 'LOVE'. God wanted to see the one who has got and won Abraham's heart- God or Isaac.
Abraham's quick response to God's command to sacrifice Isaac showed to God that He's got the whole of Abraham's heart.
Check your heart too- do you love your child more than God. That was Eli's undoing, he loved his two sons (Hophni and Phinehas) more than God. While Abraham was more than willing to sacrifice his own son at God's command, Eli was not willing to deprive his children and discipline them for God's love and pleasure.
As a parent, you must chose and live for God more than your children. You must be willing to offer them to God that they might prosper and live longer like Isaac.
Be intentional to let your children see and know that you love God more than them. When you do, you would have simply committed them to God for his blessings and protection.
God is the only one worthy of our love beyond anything or anyone else in this world.
