Text : John 15:10
If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.
Today, we shall begin by looking at Grace and Truth which was brought to us by our Lord Jesus Christ. And we shall gradually conclude with our study text in the coming days.
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is the gospel of grace and not of works. This simply means that no one is saved by works but by grace. The scriptures says *"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." (Ephesians 2:8 & 9).*
While we are not saved by works, it is worthy to note that the grace of God that saved us, is a call away from both licentious and legalistic lifestyle. This grace of our Lord Jesus Christ therefore bestows on you as a believer the liberating power of the Holy Spirit from the penalty and power of sin.
Many preachers have deliberately ignored the very grace that Jesus Christ represented, and that was preached to the gentiles by Apostle Paul. The scripture says that the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.(John 1:17).
From the above, you can see that Jesus Christ represented grace and truth. Infact, Jesus Christ is grace and truth personified. Hence, anything short of grace and truth is not Christ.
Anywhere you see believers laying hold unto grace with reckless neglect of truth, such will surely lead to a licentious living, and where truth is being held unto with reckless neglect of grace, believers tend towards legalism.
GRACE AND TRUTH IS JESUS CHRIST. Just as you can't divide Him, so also you cannot separate grace and truth. It takes the two for a believer to have a balanced walk with the Lord and to continually experience victory in his daily walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Apostle Paul asked a question in Romans 6:1: "...Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?..." The responses that follow this singular question began to supply the answer to the question, and that's the other side of Jesus Christ which is Truth.
Apostle Paul continued by saying, "...Certainly not, how shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?, Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?"
He highlighted in verses 2b and 3 what truth teaches. He said, "...do you not know..."
What is that thing that you need to know if not the truth. It is the truth that sets free. So, what will keep you away from sin is grace that is well established on the truth. Hence, John 8:32 says, "....and you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free"
So, If I am going to outline Romans 6:1-3 in my own understanding, I will put it thus: "Shall we continue in sin and ask that grace should abound, no that's not possible, don't you know about the truth that goes with grace, and the truth which will help your grace become potent and sets you free. The truth is that those who have been baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death and this you must know!"
The verse three is a question of what you know. So, if you don't know this truth, the grace you are holding unto will be empty and unable to give you true liberty from sin. And Apostle Paul said about such kind of grace that makes room for sin- God forbid!
It is important for you to know that *Grace is no grace unless it walks side by side with Truth that sets free.*
*Bible reading:*
Romans 6:1-12.
