Text : Psalms 42:1
As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.
According to the dictionary, to pant is to breathe quickly or in a labored manner, as after exertion or from eagerness or excitement. In Hebrew, the word, Pant is to long for.
It is good to consider the reason why deer pants for water brooks, this will help us to appreciate the reason the Psalmist's soul pants after God as well.
A deer does not sweat, hence the only option for cooling off its heat is to drink water. So, when a deer longs or pants for water, it is actually seeking for life. Death is inevitable if the deer is unable to get in touch with water brook when it is heating up within.
So, the survival of a deer is dependent on water brook. When the deer is in need of water to cool off, nothing else will suffice.
This is also the reality of every man. The only thing that can cool off the heat of death within every man is God. It is therefore important for every human on earth to know that God is the very essence of life. *Whether anyone knows this or not, the neglect of God in one's life is at one's peril.* God is life. No one can truly live without Him.
When the deer is panting after the water brooks, there is nothing else that can help it- except water!
In the same way, nothing or no one can help you to live except God. God is all that you need. It is also worthy to note that you cannot reach God except through Jesus Christ His Son. (Matthew 11:27, John 1:18).
The longings of your soul can only be satisfied by God. The earlier you set your mind on God the better. Many have turned to the devil for the satisfaction of their soul longings , all to realise that only dissatisfaction and perils is what the devil has to offer.
Your spouse, children, money, or job cannot satisfy the longings of your soul. The vacuum in your soul is too big that even the whole world cannot fill it. *The thirst of every man's soul can only be quenched by God and God alone.* When your soul is thirsty, your only option is to turn to God.
That's the reason Jesus asked in Matthew 16:26- For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
It is clear from the scripture above that the world cannot satisfy the longings in a man's soul.
The victory or possession of yesterday is no longer satisfying today.
It is important for you to settle it in your heart that the only lasting and enduring Satisfaction, Joy and Peace can only be found in GOD!
