Text: Matthew 5:14.
*Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.*
Imagine a world with no light, no sunlight, no electric power supply, no means of light whatsoever. It will be a frustrating, uninteresting, dark place to live in.
But in actual fact, this world is truly a dark place. The whole world lies in darkness and wickedness. 1 John 5:19.
Later on, Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 ISV. You can do a little calculation here :
1.) *I am the light of the world.* : That is, without Jesus, the world is in darkness.
2.) *Following Jesus :* *Explicitly, Jesus says the one who follows me will never walk in darkness.* That is, whoever refuses to follow Jesus is walking in darkness. *Regardless of your status or achievements, if you are not following Jesus, you are walking in darkness.*
Proverbs 4:19 says The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. (We'll look into who a wicked person is later).
3.) *Light of life ;* This presupposes that there's a light needed for living. And this light is Jesus Christ. ```In him was life; and the life was the light of men``` .John 1:4.
Note that before Jesus came to this world physically, there has been sunlight and every other kind of lights but they are not the light of men.
The only light that man needs to live(unto God) is Jesus Christ. This was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world. (John 1:9)
Now, you would expect everyone to embrace the light and have nothing to do with darkness anymore. But that's not the case.
*People will be condemned not because they were born in darkness, but because they refused the light.*
*And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.* John 3:19.
Jesus came to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.Luke 1:79.
Now, man is inexcusable. God has given us the power of choice, He said,
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: Deuteronomy 30:19.
