NAMES

Text : Ruth 1:2 ISV

*The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name was Naomi, and their two sons were named Mahlon and Chilion—Ephrathites from Bethlehem of Judah. They journeyed to the country of Moab and lived there for some time.*

*Names are more than your identity,  it speaks volume about your personality.*

I've had reasons to ask quite a number of  people for the meaning of their names,  and I'm surprised or should I say appalled at how a chunk percentage of them do not know the meaning of the names they answer.

Some parents named their children only for alliteration sake. If you asked them,  they will say "I want all my children's name to start with letter 'S', " with little or no consideration for its meaning.

At times, some go to social media asking just anybody to help them with a name for their wards,  how very pathetic. Well, this is so because they lacked the understanding of the imports of names.

Such was the case of the family recounted in our text. The names of every member of this family was mentioned because God wants us to learn some things about their names. Let's briefly look into their names.

1. *Elimelech*: it means my God is King. Obviously, his parents gave him a good name, but he is not aware of it. He married and became a father without realising that God was his King. His ignorance  led him to take a very costly decision. Ruth 1:1.

*When you don't know the value of what you have,  you will easily trade it for something of lesser or no value.*

Get a grip over your life. Don't just answer to what you know nothing about, whether good or bad. If your name is good,  live up to it,  if it's bad, even if you can't change it as it  were, you can change its  imports on you just like Jabez did. 1 Chronicles.  4:9-10.1.

2. *Naomi :* Her name means "my delight". It also means kindness, pleasantness, delightfulness, beauty and favour. All of these are the portion of whoever takes God as his king. *If God is your king indeed,  then you are in for a big deal.*

3. *Marlon :* His name means sickness or weakness. Now, how can parents so named their child?

Well,  maybe because of the situation surrounding his birth,  or because they just didn't bother about the meaning of the name, they may simply fall in love with how it sounds.

Whichever way, a bad name had been given to a child,  and he lived up to it. He died at his prime. How do you expect sickness or weakness to live till old age.

*Your birth may be a mistake, but you obviously are no mistake. Your birth may not be planned, but God has a beautiful plan for you. Don't stick with the mistake,  stick with God.*

 *PRAYER FOCUS*

1. LORD,  I cancel every negative and evil import my name carries in Jesus name.

THE GOOD FIGHT-2

Text:  1 Timothy  6:12   Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. Another thing to pursue in fighting the good fight of faith is Godliness. We understand through the Holy scriptures that godliness is profitable unto all things.   *For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.* 1 Timothy  4:8.  You will reap the reward of your godliness not only when you get to heaven, but from here on earth. And this is why we are admonished to exercise ourselves unto godliness. (1 Timothy  4:7), because godliness with contentment is great gain.1 Timothy  6:6. Godliness is the practice of conforming to the image of God by reflecting the nature of the kingdom of God in the course of everyday life. In other words, godliness is living and portray...

WAY MAKER-2

Text: Isaiah 43:19 Behold, I will do a new thing: now it shall spring forth: shall ye not know it?  I will even make a way in the wilderness,  and rivers in the desert. God promised that He will do a new thing for you, and that He will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. He has done this before, and He will do it again even in your own life.  When the children of Israel left Egypt, the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them, encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon.(Exodus 14:9). Just like anyone would react, the Isrealites became so fearful because there is neither way forward nor back for them to escape. Before them was the red sea, behind them were the Egyptian armies. They became perplexed and began to murmur against Moses. It is possible you are also in a situation like the Israelites- No way forward, and no way behind. Things may appear like you are ...

BEWARE OF DOGS

Text :  Philippians 3:2. Beware of the dogs! Beware of the evil workers! Beware of the mutilators! Usually, when you see the inscription "BEWARE OF DOGS", you instantly know there's a wild or trained dog around the corner, hence, the need to beware.  However, when God says 'Beware of dogs,' He wasn't actually referring to dogs as in 'animals' but to animals in human skin. Note that this caution was given to believers against other so-called  believers.  That is, some people within the church that we refer to as brothers and sisters are actually operating in the capacity of dogs.Though fellow worshippers in the church are called brothers and sisters, but if they behave like wild animals, know that they are dogs in humans skin- BEWARE. Matthew  7:6 says *Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.*  Essentially, dogs don't have capacity to r...
